U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Kurta, commander of Combined Joint Task Force- Horn of Africa, is joined by dignitaries and officials from the U.S. and Japan in making the ceremonial first cut to the cake during the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force welcome aboard reception ceremony held at Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, June 1. The JMSDF have deployed two P-3 aircraft that will patrol and provide aerial information on suspect vessels and join U.S. forces in anti-piracy missions. The service members of CJTF-HOA, headquartered in Djibouti, employ an indirect approach to counter violent extremism. Through a strategy of cooperative conflict prevention the task force helps build the internal capacities of countries at risk to prevail against extremists exploiting instability.
