PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb. 23, 2015) -- Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Collan Smith signals an MH-53 Stallion to takeoff from the flight deck of amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6). America is currently conducting training maritime operations of the coast of California. The ship is the first of its class and is optimized for Marine Corps aviation.
