The American flag flies at half-staff during a sand storm over Life Support Area, Kuwait on June 30 as a mark of respect to the memory of retired U.S. Army Gen. John R. Guthrie, who died May 25 in Washington at the age of 87. To honor General Guthrie's 39-year Army career, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, Gen. George W. Casey, ordered the national flag flown at half-staff at all installations, activities, and vessels of the Department of the Army, in the District of Columbia and throughout the U.S. and its territories and possessions from reveille to retreat. The flags from left to right are the Army flag, the Hawaiian flag, the Australian flag, the Kuwait flag, and the American flag.
