Marines and Sailors with Weapons Co., Battalion Landing Team 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit move into the well deck of the amphibious assault ship to board a U.S. Navy landing craft. The Marines are headed to the isolated island of Oshima to participate in Operation Field Day, a debris-clearing and cleanup project designed to open access to the harbor and area roads. The 31st MEU is participating in Operation Tomodachi at the request of the Japanese government after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeast coast of Japan.
