Drill Instructor Sgt. Raymond S. Adams, Platoon 1034, Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, reads a drill card for his next command during an initial drill evaluation March 9, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. Drill cards list the sequence of commands and are mandatory during the evaluation. The cards are considered part of the uniform and part of a drill movement when being read. Adams, 26, is from Donalsonville, Ga. Alpha Company is scheduled to graduate May 1, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
