A U.S. Marine Corps recruit winces in pain as a fellow recruit stands on her shoulders during the Crucible, Sept. 12, 2014, Parris Island, S.C. In the Crucible, the recruits faced a 54-hour training exercise that validates the physical, mental and moral training they've endured throughout recruit training. They conquered challenges testing their physical strength, skills and the Marine Corps values they learned throughout training. Throughout the event, the recruits were only allowed a limited amount of food and sleep.
