Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Arthur Ballard, holding a POW/MIA bracelet that was worn in his honor while he was a captive in the infamous Hoa Lo prison, aka the "Hanoi Hilton", stands in his office with Clemson University junior Will Hines. Hines was interviewing veterans for an undergraduate research project that gives him history credits at Clemson. Ballard, an F-105 fighter pilot, was shot down and captured on Sept. 26, 1966. "I think it was small arms fire, maybe 32 or 57 millimeter. The sky just filled up with that stuff. I don't remember a whole lot about the bailout. I woke up on the ground with a broken leg, and a rifle stuck in my face." He was finally released six and a half years later, on March 4, 1973. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Ken Scar)
