From May 11-14, HON Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Environment and Energy and HON Miranda Ballentine, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Energy conducted a joint tour of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson JBER (official), Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska and Fort Wainwright. The purpose of these visits is to give the two leaders a first-hand view of the joint base environment. During their visit they discussed the benefits of joint basing and the joint training opportunities resulting from close communications between the Services. In addition to both Assistant Secretaries taking part in aerial tours of the bases, they visited the construction site of a new waste water treatment facility on JBLM, a methane power plant which produces electricity from the nearby municipal landfill on JBER, and toured coal-fired power plants on Eielson Air Force Base and Fort Wainwright. Col. Cape Zemp, Fort Wainwright Garrison commander and Col. Michael P. Winkler, commander, 354th Fighter Wing, Eielson Air Force Base hosted the group during their tour of the area. During the aerial tours of Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base Col. Cape Zemp, Fort Wainwright Garrison commander and Col. Michael P. Winkler, commander, 354th Fighter Wing, Eielson Air Force Base, pointed out and explained key components and facilities throughout their bases. Brig. Gen. Steven L. Basham, the Director of Strategy, Plans and Programs, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, joined the group during the tour.
