Tina Cordova, 81st Civil Affairs Battalion civil affairs officer out of Fort Hood, Texas, and Hope Mills, N.C. native, and U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Moreira, 81st CAB civil affairs NCOIC, from Manta, Ecuador, visit residences surrounding the Gabriela Mistral primary school construction site in Ocotes Alto, Honduras, June 5, 2015, while being escorted by members of the Honduran Army’s 15th Battalion. Civil affairs is one part of the New Horizons Honduras 2015 training exercise which also involves members of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. New Horizons was launched in the 1980s and is an annual joint humanitarian assistance exercise that U.S. Southern Command conducts with a partner nation in Central America, South America or the Caribbean. The exercise improves joint training readiness of U.S. and partner nation civil engineers, medical professionals and support personnel through humanitarian assistance activities.
