U.S. Marine Sgt. Garrett Kastl is a motor transport operator and platoon sergeant with Combat Logistics Battalion 15, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, aboard the USS Anchorage (LPD 23). As a platoon sergeant, Kastl has an important role to supervise his platoon while they conduct preventative maintenance. Kastl firmly believes in leading from the front and guiding his junior Marines. “Noncommissioned officers are essential, needed, and respected,” said Kastl, which is the reason corporals and sergeants are trusted to be able to hold such billets. Kastl’s dedication to his billet truly embodies the mission of small unit leadership. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Steve H. Lopez/Released)
