Kurdish Democratic Party President Massoud Barzani (far left) guides Brig. Gen. Carter F. Ham, (center) Commander, Multinational Brigade-North and Herro Mustafa, (third from left) northern Iraq Coalition Provisional Authority Coordinator, through the streets of Dierra, Iraq. The group met in the small village in the northern region on May 18, to discuss the future of the region as June 30, the date for transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqi people, draws closer. The northern region of Iraq has historically been occupied by the Kurdish people. Barzani also serves as a member of the Iraqi Governing Council, and is a former president of the country. Ham and the Soldiers of Task Force Olympia and the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), both based at Fort Lewis, Wash., are working closely with the Kurdish and Arab populations in northern Iraq to bring peace and stability to the region. In partnership, Coalition forces and the people of Iraq are enhancing the infrastructure of the region through the development of strong government, education and medical systems.
