Melina Nolte, 31, left, with her daughter, Alanna, 8, in front of a portrait of Marine Sgt. Nicholas Nolte at their home Sept. 17 in Haveloc, N.C., near Marine Corps Base Cherry Point. Nicholas died Nov. 24, 2004, from wounds suffered during combat operations in Iraq. Although, it's been nearly five years since Nicholas's death, Melina, a native of upstate New York, decided to raise their daughter here where the family was last stationed. It's not uncommon for survivors of fallen service members to feel more at home in military communities rather than their home of records.
