Sgt. Theodore Cothran, a Marine Corps Marital Arts Instructor-Trainer with 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, participates in a ground fighting bout against Cpl. Michael Whalen, a student in the MAI Course and a rifleman also with 1/8, July 16, 2015, as part of a sustainment integration drill. The drill is an important part of the course because it teaches the students the importance of teamwork and how to push beyond their breaking points in stressful situations, according to Whalen.
