The fine sand of the Afghanistan desert, referred to as "moon dust," proved one of the biggest challenges Maj. Lauren Edwards, future operations and engineer officer, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, and 1st Lt. Erin Demchko, maintenance management officer, Marine Wing Support Squadron 371, Marine Aircraft Group 40, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, faced while training for the 2009 Marine Corps Marathon during their deployment to Camp Leatherneck in Helmand province. Demchko will run the race in Washington, D.C., Oct. 25, 2009, while Edwards has organized a satellite race to take place at Camp Leatherneck also Oct. 25.
