U.S. Army Cpl. Craig Chavez of Temecula, Calif., who suffered extensive wounds to include the loss of one eye and 60-percent vision loss in the surviving eye from an improvised explosive device blast in 2006, displays his Purple Heart glass eye Oct. 15, during a visit to Camp Ramadi, Iraq, thanks to Operation Proper Exit co-sponsored by the United Service Organizations and Troops First Foundation. Physical rehabilitation is essential for these troops, but visiting Iraq helps bring them mental and emotional recovery. This visit allowed the combat-wounded troops the opportunity to enter and leave Iraq on their own terms, giving them back the power they sought.
