A search and rescue team assigned to 92nd Engineer Battalion, Fort Stewart, Ga., traipse a rubble pile and negotiate a deteriorating tower to find casualties during a training exercise here at Camp Blanding, Fla. as part of an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise, or EDRE Aug. 24. This scenario-based training event is comprised of more than 600 Soldiers from installations across the nation, including Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Stewart, Ga. Here, a notional earthquake caused a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRNE) event, triggering the deployment of support forces consisting of engineers, chemical, and medical personnel. In the event of an actual natural disaster, Department of Defense personnel may be asked to support civilian authorities, such as FEMA or other local government agencies, with providing aid and assistance to the effected population.
