Lt. Gen. Samuel T. Helland, who recently relinquished command of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Central Command and I Marine Expeditionary Force, salutes Gen. James T. Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, during his retirement ceremony at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Oct. 16, 2009. Helland's military career spanned more than 41 years, beginning with a combat tour in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and ending with him overseeing Marine efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East, south Asia and east Africa.
