During a ceremony held in South Korea, Maj. Gen. Michael Bills, 1st Cavalry Division commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew Barteky, senior enlisted advisor of the 1st Cav. Div., joined Maj. Gen. Theodore Martin, the 2nd Infantry Division commanding general, Maj. Gen. Yoo, the Republic Of Korea Army 20th Division commanding general, and veterans of the Korean War to commemorate a new monument to the Battle of Chipyong-ni, Sept. 16, 2015. The battle of Chipyong-ni took place in February 1951, in which elements of the ROKA, a French battalion, the 23rd Infantry Regiment of 2nd ID, and 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cav. Div., handed the Chinese Army their first defeat in the Korean War.
"Together we defeated the Chinese communist forces here, only because of the courage of our veterans, and our shared commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea,” said Bills. “65 years later, we stand in wonder of the accomplishments of this great nation.”
