Steve Wilson, a former member of The United States Air Force Band's vocal ensemble The Singing Sergeants, plays the dramatic role of Maj. Gen. Billy Mitchel, an historic U.S. Army general who is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force. Wilson played this role, accompanied by music performed by the band during a rehearsal of the United States Air Force Tattoo themed "The U.S. Air Force: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," on Sept. 16, 2015. The Air Force District of Washington commemorated the U.S. Air Force's 68th birthday with the official ceremony on Sept. 17 with a celebration of music, drill and ceremony, aircraft, and fireworks on the Air Force Ceremonial Lawn at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. The event included flyovers of several aircraft that included the Air Force Thunderbirds and a Warbird vintage aircraft squadron, as well as performances by the Air Force Band and Honor Guard.
