Drought conditions have persisted in the Sahelian area of West Africa for more than four years. Millions of cattle, goats and camels have perished in their search for food and water in Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Upper Volta and Senegal. In losing their livestock, the people of these countries have lost everything and many face desperate hunger. The United States, through the Agency for International Development, and other countries have provided emergency food to meet the critical needs of these people. Dakar dock workers fill bags with sorghum, then weigh and stack them for shipment to cities in the interior of the drought zone.
