ARABIAN GULF (Sept. 26, 2015) Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Ryan Mitchell and Chief David Pierce throw a gun target overboard from the hangar bay of Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) in preparation for a live-fire exercise. Essex is the flagship of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and, with the embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
