Two U.S. Air Force combat controllers from the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron communicate with an A-10C Thunderbolt II pilot launching during austere landing training on Bicycle Lake Army Airfield at the National Training Center range, Fort Irwin, Calif., Sept. 22, 2015. The training familiarized the pilots with landing and takeoffs for forward deployed location on surfaces not designed or maintained for heavy aircraft. Combat controllers survey and establish airfields in austere or hostile areas while also providing air traffic control to land aircraft during combat and humanitarian missions.
