SANTA RITA, Guam (Nov. 02, 2015) –Sailors from submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) set a submarine periscope on a safety rail in the optical shop on board. Sailors can perform repairs or maintenance on periscopes in the optical shop and the ship also has a storage area to keep a stock of periscopes. This evolution renewed a capability that has not been employed for nearly a decade. Submarine tenders stocked with vital spare parts, such as a periscope, are a key aspect of providing repair support to submarines and keeping them fully operational. Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
