PHILIPPINE SEA (Nov. 09, 2015) Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Nils Edvardsen, right, assigned to the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), serves as a safety observer during an M240B machine gun as part of live fire training while Emory S. Land is at sea. Weapons qualification courses enable Sailors to stand armed watches and helps deter aggression from possible threats. Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility.
