Nancy Martinez proudly pins the drill sergeant badge onto her husband Staff Sgt. Angel Martinez during a ceremony at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy Nov. 9 as their son Pvt. Nathaniel Blake Ortiz and 2-year-old daughter Angelys look on. Martinez and his step-son Ortiz were both training on Fort Jackson at the same time. Ortiz, a Soldier in training with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, left home within two days of his father. "It was really tough being so close to him and not being able to go see him," Martinez said after the ceremony. He was able to see Ortiz when he helped his unit conduct physical training.
