The troops celebrated after the event with a cake cutting. Five of the soldiers joined together and cut the first slice with a saber sword. The NCO sword was adopted by the War Department in 1840. It has been worn by Army sergeants for more than 100 years. It is primarily used for honor guards and presentations today.
