M.C. Meigs is inscribed in the steps within the Meigs Vault, adjacent to the Georgetown Reservoir as part of the Washington Aqueduct project in the District of Columbia, Jan. 8, 2016. There are 39 steps descending into the Meigs Vault; the riser of each is cast with the inscription “M.C. Meigs.” Capt. Montgomery C. Meigs was an 1832 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, which at that time was the only engineering school in the country. Meigs was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer personally directed by Congress to design and build the Washington Aqueduct. He served as the chief architect and engineer during the original construction from 1852 through 1860. This vault is not in use today. (U.S. Army photo by Sarah Gross, this photo was cropped)
