An aerial view of Fresh Kills Landfill, Staten Island, N.Y., was taken from a New Jersey Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter Oct. 3, 2001. Debris from Ground Zero began arriving at the Fresh Kills Landfill almost immediately after Sept. 11, 2001. Fresh Kills is being used as a temporary sorting ground for the rubble from Ground Zero. The operation at Fresh Kills has three objectives: to find human remains, personal effects and any evidence of the terrorist attack such as a hijacker’s box cutters, cell phones from the planes and the black boxes.
