Maj. Gen. Alden Earl Stilson, Jr., retired, addresses the Soldiers and family members of the 412th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) Dec. 12, 2015, at the 2015 Winter Ball. “Since World War II when I joined to the present day Army,” Stilson stated, “leadership is the one thing that stands out to the American armed forces to guarantee success. You cannot lead from a foxhole. Leaders must get out among the troops to be effective.” Stilson enlisted in the Army in 1943. Stilson eloquently spoke about how important leadership is today. Leadership can make or break a unit, and he gave examples from World War II up to when he commanded the 83rd Army Reserve Command (ARCOM) in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1980s. Stilson added throughout his speech that leadership is why the American Army and the American armed forces are the best in the world.
