Private First Class James N. Gathondu, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, conducts a buddy drag with a fellow recruit during an event of the Crucible at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Jan. 13. Gathondu spent most of his life in Kenya where he made the decision to become a Marine and be a part of the Corps’ rich heritage and traditions. Following recruit training, he will move on to Marine Combat Training in Camp Pendleton, Calif., and then on to his military occupational specialty school for his job as a motor transportation operator. He plans on making a career out of Marine Corps. Gathondu is a native of Kikuyu, Kenya, and was recruited out of Recruiting Station Fort Worth, Texas.
