Les Payne interviews the leader of the movement to end apartheid, the late Nelson Mandela, on his first day out of a 27-year imprisonment in the backyard of his home in Orlando West, Soweto, just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. Payne’s knack for covering human rights abuses and corruption would earn him numerous awards. “During my career, Newsday won 14 Pulitzer Prizes and of those fourteen I was involved directly as a reporter or an editor in half of them,” he said.
