Lt. Gen. Perry L. Wiggins, commander of the United States Army North (Fifth Army) and senior commander of Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis, addresses the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce for its Military City U.S.A. Speaker series Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Sunset Station in downtown San Antonio. The lieutenant general spoke about the importance of managing the military retiree population in the city that is currently growing at a rate of about 300 retired veterans each month. “Bottom line for me: Military City U.S.A. absolutely deserves its moniker,” Wiggins said. San Antonio has the second largest retired veteran population in the United States with 58,000 veterans, behind San Diego. Wiggins said the city needs to be vigilante to the growing needs in its urban infrastructure for the swelling military community. “Those who are in this station, we probably won’t see the fruits of our labor in uniform, as we push some of these improvements. But, as (NFL Hall of Fame coach) Vince Lombardi said, ‘It’s not import. Get a first down, then we’ll think about touchdowns.’ And that is true here.” Afterward, the commander thanked the business community for its continued support. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt.
