Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Cody and his spouse, Athena Cody, talk with Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., following a hearing of the House Appropriations Committee - Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, Feb. 26, 2016, in Washington. Fortenberry is vice chair of the subcommittee. The oversight hearing was being held to learn about quality of life in the military concerns from each of the service's senior most enlisted members. During his opening statement, Cody stressed the cumulative impacts of sequestered and reduced budgets on the compensation and quality of life of Airmen and their families. He reminded the committee members that, "We must never lose sight of the full impact on our Airmen's readiness and resilience, as well as our ability to recruit and retain your all-volunteer, professional force." Cody stressed that the Airmen who serve today do so freely, proudly and voluntarily because they believe in what America stands for and are ready to defend its cause. He added that our nation must honor that commitment by providing for them and their families. Appearing along with Cody were: Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey, Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Ronald Green and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Michael Stevens. (U.S. Air Force Photo/Jim Varhegyi)
