EAST SEA (March 13, 2016) The USNS Montford Point (T-ESD 1), an Expeditionary Transfer Dock, floats off the coast of South Korea during Exercise Ssang Yong 16, a biennial combined amphibious exercise between the armed forces of the Republic of Korea, U.S., Australia and New Zealand. An ETD allows equipment and personnel to transfer from a large naval vessel to a smaller one, such as a landing craft air cushion vehicle, in order to execute ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship movements during an amphibious operation.
