Thomas Atkin, the Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Global Security and Adm. Bill Gortney, Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command (NORAD and USNORTHCOM) pose for a photo at the command’s 9/11 memorial wall on March 23, 2016. USNORTHCOM was created in the months following the Sept 11, 2001, attacks to bring together civilian, military and international agencies for the defense of North America. During his visit, Atkin received briefings on the status of the command’s mission and capabilities as well as the command’s international partnerships.
