A muzzle flash extends from the tube of an 81-mm mortar as Vermont National Guard Soldiers engage targets on a range at Camp Atterbury, Ind., on a below-freezing, Jan. 29, night. The mortar fire, which could be heard in the surrounding communities and concluded this week, was part of the pre-deployment training for the 86th Brigade Combat Team.
