Chief Master Sgt. Matt Caruso, the command chief with Air Force Special Operations Command, escorts Lt. Gen. Brad Heithold, the commander of AFSOC, out to a crowd of Airmen prior to presenting him with an AFSOC Order of the Sword invitation at Hurlburt Field, Fla., May 2, 2016. Roughly 150 people joined the command chief to present Heithold his invitation. The Order of the Sword, which is the highest award the enlisted corps can bestow upon an officer, draws its heritage from military tradition where non-commissioned officers honor leaders who have made significant contributions to the enlisted corps. "This goes down as the proudest day of my Air Force career," said Heithold. "This is probably the best thing that could ever happen to an officer; to be recognized in this fashion." Heithold will be the 10th person to receive the AFSOC Order of the Sword when it's presented Nov. 18, 2016, at Hurlburt Field, Fla. The general was nominated by the president, and confirmed by the Senate to become principle deputy director of cost assessment and program assessment for the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C.
