U.S. Marines and NATO allies participate in the opening ceremony for Platinum Eagle aboard Smardan training area, Romania, May 9, 2016. Platinum Eagle is an annual exercise where multi-national troops conduct integrated attacks in order to increase cooperation and combat power between the United States and their NATO allies and partners. While Marines are in Romania participating in this exercise, additional Marines with Black Sea Rotational Force are in Bulgaria participating in Platinum Lion. Conducting two simultaneous exercises in two different countries demonstrates the ability Marines to conduct a variety of combat training operations across multiple countries in Eastern Europe.
