African Partnership Station (APS) West Commander, Capt. Cindy Thebaud, speaks to an audience at a graduation ceremony for African partners from Benin, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria held on Sekondi Naval Base. The graduation marked the completion of a 20-day in-port and at-sea training program where the Africa sailors learned about various topics including fisheries management, small-boat maintenance, oil platform security, basic first aid, and search-and-rescue tactics. Training was mainly conducted aboard USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) as part of the APS West initiative. Gunston Hall is on a scheduled deployment in West Africa in support of APS, an international initiative developed by Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa that aims to improve maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa.
