DAHLGREN, Va. - Capt. Brian Durant, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) commander, presents the Dahlgren history book, "The Sound of Freedom," to U.S. Department of the Air Force General Counsel Gordon Tanner, at the NSWCDD sponsored 2016 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month Observance, June 22. Eight days after the Dahlgren LGBT observance, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that transgender individuals will be able to openly serve in the U.S. armed forces. Effective June 30, 2016 - service members may no longer be involuntarily separated, discharged or denied reenlistment solely on the basis of gender identity.
