Chilean Navy Lt. Hector Quiñones, the navigation officer aboard the Chilean Navy frigate CNS Almirante Cochrane (FF 05), decided to dedicate himself to naval service at age 14. His father was in the navy for 31 years and as a child he lived many places moving with his father from station to station. At age 15, Quiñones entered service, and went to the naval officers academy for four years. Afterwards he served aboard the training ship La Esmeralda, as all Chilean navy officers must do, then served seven years doing patrols south of Chile in an icebreaker class transport ship.
“I liked working with the transport ships because of the mixed working environment with military, civilians and scientists,” Quiñones said. “The weather is more difficult there and the experience is much different than a warship.”
As a navigation officer, Quiñones likes seeing navigational plans come together. He works directly with the captain with navigational charts and programming the ships computers.
After 14 years of service, Quiñones finds himself in Hawaii for the second time at his first Exercise Rim of the Pacific.
Twenty-six nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Antonio Turretto Ramos)
