Airmen from the 169th Fighter Wing load "rolling stock" onto a C-17 Globemaster III at the south ramp at McEntire Joint National Guard Base, South Carolina. The C-17 aircraft and it's crew are from the 628th Air Base Wing at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Elements of the South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing are making Air Force history with their latest deployment to Southwest Asia for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit is sending its F-16 fighter jets, pilots, maintenance specialists and support personnel overseas for their first combat operation since becoming an "Active Associate" wing. This unprecedented agreement with the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw AFB Base embeds active duty Airmen with South Carolina's only Air Guard unit to forge an even stronger, more mobile force. Never in the history of the U.S. military has a Guard unit possessed the ability to fulfill this type of deployment.
