NORTH SEA (Sept. 3, 2016) — Augustin Ortiz, an underwater archaeologist with the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), jots down notes during a magnetometer survey of a shipwreck site, Sept. 3, 2016. Underwater archaeologists from NHHC are aboard the Military Sealift Command rescue and salvage ship USNS Grasp (T-ARS 51) conducting a remote sensing survey of a shipwreck that may be that of Revolutionary War ship Bonhomme Richard. Commanded by John Paul Jones, Bonhomme Richard was lost Sept. 23, 1779 following her victory over the much more heavily armed HMS Serapis.
