Brig. Gen. Laurie Hummel, Alaska National Guard adjutant general, embraces Mary Schaeffer, wife of former Alaska Adjutant General Maj. Gen. John Schaeffer Jr, during the late general’s memorial service at Kotzebue, Alaska, Aug. 31, 2016. Schaeffer enlisted in the Alaska National Guard in 1957, and served for 34 years. Schaeffer was the first Alaska Native two-star general of the Alaska National Guard and commissioner of the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
