On June 6, 1918, Marines from the 5th Regiment had to cross wheat fields such as this while facing intense machine gun fire from German troops who were deeply entrenched in forests that make up Belleau Wood. On that first day of combat, more Marines were killed or injured than in all of the Corps' previous 143 years of existence. After several attempts, 5th Marines was able to drive the Germans from their machine gun nests, using bayonets and close combat, and establish a foothold in the wood that would allow the Marines to eventually win the battle. The Marines of both the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments returned to Belleau Wood after 93 years to commemorate the battle their units fought in nearly a century ago. During their trip, they conducted a walkthrough study of the attack and walked in the footsteps of their predecessors.
