Ensign Stephan Gallagher, a native of Kent, Ohio assigned to USS Philippine Sea, homeported in Mayport, Fla. The ship, which recently completed an extensive overhaul of the combat and engineering control systems, docked for Fleet Week New York before continuing to make preparation for an upcoming Arabian Gulf deployment to defend against those who would threaten our nation's interests. Gallagher, who is the ship's Main Propulsion Division Officer/Anti-Submarine Warfare Evaluator/ Weather Officer, is the son of Tom and Mary Gallagher of Kent, attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and Pennsylvania University. "The support and gratitude shown by the citizens of the New York was far and away beyond my wildest dreams and very much appreciated. Whether it were subways, ferries, restaurants, bars, shows, ball parks or especially the people, we were shown a week well beyond what I could have imagined," said Gallagher. "In a week we received many thanks. I'd like to personally thank New Yorkers for their support and hospitality." Approximately 3,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman are participating in the 23rd Fleet Week New York, which is taking place through June 2. Fleet Week has been New York City's celebration of the sea services since 1984.
