FORT MCCLELLAN, Ala. (Oct. 15, 2016) -- Soldiers assigned to a variety of units throughout the Alabama Army National Guard gather to celebrate their participation in the State Command Sergeant Major's Match and the Adjutant General's Match, a two-part, advanced marksmanship skills competition here at the Pelham Range complex, Oct. 15, 2016.
Shooters in the matches fire M-16A2 rifles from select distances ranging between 500 yards to 25 yards from the target line in both sustained-fire and rapid-fire modes while prone, sitting, kneeling, standing, or moving on foot while quickly engaging targets within set time limits.
The combined score totals that each shooter earns during the two-part event are tallied with the shooters finishing in the top 10 per cent for the competition qualifying for award of the U. S. Army Excellence-In-Competition Rifleman badge.
The shooters finishing the matches with the top 20 overall scores become the "The Governor's Twenty" as the 2017 State Marksmanship Team of the Alabama Army National Guard and will compete against Army National Guard teams representing other states and territories of the United States.
