On Sept. 1, 2006. Cpl. Jason H. Gerstner, a member of the rear security element of 1st Platoon, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, poses next to a wheel of a tactical vehicle known as the "Buffalo" used in road clearance operations in the Al Anbar Province. Trading a full-time job in an American metropolitan area for an around-the-clock job in a combat zone, and leaving behind regular visits with an 8-year old son for a year-long absence, Gerstner, joined the Marine Corps in the middle of his life, at age 28. Now with 1st Platoon, the Marine they call "Old Man" is constantly sought after by his peers as a role model. "I respect him becaua member of the rear security element, 1st Platoon, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Fwd), Cpl. Jason H. Gerstner, sits on the hood of a humvee similar to the one he manned while engaging operations in the Al Anbar Province. Trading a full-time job in an American metropolitan area for an around-the-clock job in a combat zone, and leaving behind regular visits with an 8-year old son for a year-long absence, Gerstner, joined the Marine Corps in the middle of his life, at age 28. After the attacks of Sept. 11, he felt that despite the personal sacrifices like seeing his son and his parents, he needed to serve his country. "Corporal Gerstner is a Marines' Marine," said Staff Sgt. Michael R. Leisure, 33, platoon sergeant of 1st Platoon and a Parkersburg, W. Va., native. "He is destined to do great things; there is nothing he can't do." 1st Platoon, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group is deployed with I MEF (FWD) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq (MNF-W) to develop the Iraqi Security Forces, facilitate the development of official rule of law through democratic government reforms, and continue the development of a market based economy centered on Iraqi Reconstruction.
