Jacqueline Ashwell, the superintendent of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, shares a special moment with World War II veteran Jerry Yellin, during a ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Dec. 8, 2016. Ashwell and Yellin were participants in the "Blackened Canteen" event in which bourbon whiskey is poured into the hallowed waters as an offering of peace between the United States and Japan. The canteen used in the ceremony was recovered from the crash site of two American bombers that had earlier conducted a deadly air raid over the Japanese city of Shizuoka, killing 2,000.
