Gunnery Sgt. Shawn M. Dempsey, a platoon commander from Jersey City, N.J., assigned to Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, holds up the small-arms protective insert that saved his life. Dempsey was shot in the back by an insurgent while conducting operations in the Al Anbar Province.
